I thought I would share this video of Lakota’s first lesson. He is a 4.5 month old pure bred Malamute. He went home late, at 4 months old and in all likelihood was not socialized during those critical months between 8 and 20 weeks old. The owners are having problems with him bonding with Jim. The puppy is afraid of him and this has been upsetting. Jim and Aileen have had two Malamutes in the past and love the breed.

When a puppy this age is having fear issues I want to get going with the pup’s education ASAP. But we have to proceed slowly and carefully, not putting any pressure on the puppy and let the puppy discover that working with people is fun.

These are a few of the simple behaviors that I would introduce to any puppy but I am being especially conscious of staying quiet and careful with my movements and letting this puppy proceed at his own pace.

He really did a great job and I feel good about his future. He is taking food and trying. He is curious and willing to investigate things. His careful thoughtful demeanor is characteristic of the Northern breeds. Unlike my Border collies, who do everything as fast as possible, these dogs are highly intelligent but will take their time to understand something new before giving it a try. Self preservation!
